2008/2009 Annual Report
During Fiscal Year 2008/2009 the Commission received eight applications, which were approved with various conditions.
The Commission carried out its task with the assistance of Jeff Folger, Environmental Planner/Conservation Officer. The Commission was further assisted by staff in the Planning and Engineering Departments.
The IWA/CC sent representatives to the Open Space Task Force, SWALPAC, and the Linear Park Committee to aid these committees in addressing any wetland, conservation or land use planning issues.
In addition, the Commission oversees the management of the Wildlife Sanctuary. We are aided in this effort by a number of dedicated volunteers. Jeff Folger has taken on caretaker duties. The Commission gratefully acknowledges the support of the Parks and Grounds Department of Public Works in their annual contribution of time spent in mowing the sledding hill, and interior meadows to control invasive, exotic plant species and maintain the hill as grassland habitat. The Town continued a USDA Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program grant to maintain meadow habitat at the Wapping Park by mowing the existing meadow.
The Conservation Commission produces and updates a series of educational brochures on the Sanctuary, which are available in the Planning department, the Town Clerk's Office and at the Sanctuary. The Conservation Commission also supported the Sustainable Forest Resource Grant project and the Natural Recourse Management Initiative on selected open space parcels. Eagle Scout applicants on several of the recent open space acquisitions are carrying out many of the management recommendations listed in the project. The Commission reviews the witch hazel planting beds to stimulate a forest product income initiative.
The Conservation Commission also supported the planning and construction of a trail system at the Wapping Park. The trails and pedestrian structures were constructed by Eagle Scout candidates. Two wildlife viewing blinds were also erected within the park by Scouts.
The Commission gratefully acknowledges the support and assistance of the Public Works and Engineering Departments in the development of Wapping Park.
