ANNUAL REPORT
2006-2007
FLEET SERVICES DIVISION

The focus of the Division is to provide all departments with safe, dependable vehicles and equipment that will serve to assist them in their delivery of service to the residents.  We have the responsibility of maintaining and repairing all Town-owned vehicles and equipment except for large fire apparatus.  Staffing this Division are three full-time mechanics, the Fleet Services Manager, and a shared Administrative Secretary.  Preventive maintenance and repairs are done in-house along with the use of outside vendors for specialized repairs such as, auto body, air conditioning and glass replacement.

One additional aspect of the Fleet Service Division is its continuing partnership with Howell Cheney Technical School of Manchester, as a participant in the cooperative work experience program.  This program endorsed by the State of Connecticut Board of Education, seeks to provide students with real life work experience to augment their studies at school.  A student is selected by a referral and interview process from Cheney's Automotives Class.  He or she works in our shop part-time to gain additional experience by conducting diagnosis and repair of Town vehicles under the supervision of the Fleet Services Manager and the technical staff.  This program has proved to be a win/win situation as additional work is accomplished and their student receives a variety of experience unavailable at the school.  Also, we are proud to report, a graduate of Cheney and the co-op work experience program is successfully working full-time in the trade, for a business here in Town.

Fiscal Year 06-07 brought exciting changes as we reconstructed our parts, storage and the hydraulic workshops in the refurbished facility and set up our new office space.  Efficiencies will be gained with better planned storage and physically larger work space in the work bay areas.
