AVERY STREET DRAINAGE BY PHILIP SMITH SCHOOL

Project Description

There is poor drainage in Avery Street from Chandler Drive to the pumping station north of the school.  There are 2 catch basins on the east side of Avery Street by Cornerstone Drive.  These catch basins do not collect much water because the road grades allow the water to run off the road into yards or bypass the basins.  Between the school driveway and the Avery Street pumping station the road is flat so water ponds along the edges of the road.  This area of Avery Street, from Chandler Drive to the Avery Street pump station, is subject to severe freeze thaw cycles causing the pavement to heave and crack and requiring many return trips by snow/ice control personnel and equipment during winter to treat and clear the ice.

Project Status

Avery Street was reconstructed from Chandler Drive to Talcott Ridge Road  in 2009.  Many new catch basins and pipes were installed to collect storm water in this area and three new outlets (swales and rip rap areas) were constructed to provide stormwater treatment before it flows onto Town open space.  The road was regraded to provide a couple of new well defined low spots to collect the stormwater.  New road base material (stone and gravel), pavement and curbing was installed to provide a smooth, well built road that meets current standards and should last for many years.  Sidewalks were repaired and replaced as necessary and new handicap ramps were added at Cornerstone Drive, Philip R Smith School driveway, Hitchcock Way and Talcott Ridge Road.
